With the end of local Group C regulations for Touring Car racing, Ford hero Dick Johnson was forced to look abroad for a replacement for his Ford XE Falcon as raced in 1984.
The team purchased two Mustang GTs from the Zakspeed team in Germany, with the car on display arriving in Australia in late 1984, appearing as car #71 in practice for that year’s James Hardie 1000.
Wearing the familiar Greens-Tuf colours for the 1985 season, Johnson would use this car to secure second place in the Australian Touring Car Championship, behind Jim Richards in the BMW 635CSi. Relegated to spare car for the endurance races, this car was used in practice, qualifying and the Hardies Heroes shootout as car #18 at Bathurst, giving Johnson and co-driver Larry Perkins extra track time. Although the car qualified in 8th position, the entry was withdrawn, and the team raced their newer #17 car.
In 1986, the team entered this car in the Sandown 500 endurance race, and it was also the team’s “T” car for the Bathurst 1000, this time driven by Johnson and motorcycle ace Gregg Hansford.
In 1987, the car was sold to Kiwi racer Robbie Kerr, and then returned to Australia in 2006. Since then, the car has had significant restoration work, and has been successful in historic touring car racing.
