In 2001 Marcos Ambrose was signed by Stone Brothers Racing (SBR) to drive a Ford Falcon AU. He stunned the V8 world when he took out pole position on debut at the Australian Grand Prix support race, Albert Park. He qualified on pole again for round three at Eastern Creek, round nine at Queensland Raceway and round 11, the Bathurst 1000, where he became the first rookie to take pole position since 1987.

Ambrose drove this AU all season and finished eighth in the Shell Championship Series, winning the Rookie of the Year award and won his very first V8 Supercar round at Hidden Valley Raceway Darwin.
